39th Sunderland Scout Group laid a brick in honour of Valerie Patchett and her husband. This inspired Valerie to lay a brick in memory of her inspiring aunt Dorothy. The couple hope to visit Gilwell Park soon to see both bricks they hold dear in the path.

Valerie comes from a long line of Scouts. Her aunt, Mrs Dorothy Allen dedicated her life to Scouts and her church. Towards the end of the Second World War, Dorothy – then a teenager and Girl Guide – was asked to help the 7th South Shields Cub Packs to try and keep Cub Scouts going through the dark years of the war. That was the beginning of Dorothy’s lifelong membership with the Scouts.

Dorothy became an Assistant Cub Leader and Cub Leader of the 7th South Shields, then District Cub Leader and ADC Cubs, a position she held for many years in South Shields District (later to become South Tyneside District).

When Dorothy retired from her position as ADC in her sixties she held many positions on committees, including the Warrants Committee, in South Tyneside District. Well into her eighties, Dorothy still attended as many District events. She renewed her Cub Promise in December 2016 and sadly died in February 2017. The brick in her honour seems a fitting mark of her commitment, her service and her legacy.
