A Friendship Knot is forever Howard Denyer was a Scout in Long Ditton, Surrey, before moving to Guildford where he met Fred Parker, a fellow Scout of Guildford. Howard’s sister Jackie Churchyard (also a Surrey Scout) says, ‘They were both enthusiastic knotting devotees and spent many years explaining knots, pioneering and macramé to all sections in Scouts and Guides in the home counties as well as WIs, Probus, schools, etc, in fact, anyone who would listen!’ Jackie explains that ‘they also helped run the Surrey branch of the Guild of Knot-tyers where the members challenged each other and discussed various ‘new’ knots and their values and disadvantages.’ She says that ‘Howard and Fred were regulars at the Gilwell Reunions, setting up their stall and always having plenty of visitors eager to try knots for the first time, as well as seasoned Scouts. Sadly, Howard died suddenly in March 2015 aged nearly 67 and Fred died June 2015 aged nearly 94. Many will remember them. Great Scouts.
